Every Harmful Thing We’ve Done Comes Back to Safety + Love
Every harmful thing any of us have done is because we didn’t feel safe or loved. Or both.
I know this because I’ve been there.
My alcohol abuse was a result of running away from how unlovable I felt.
My eating disorder was my attempt at “fixing” my external world to soothe my scary and chaotic internal world.
The times I disappeared on friends, lied to family members, had casual sex, or lost my temper were desperate attempts to keep myself safe from rejection.
And I know this because I see it in my clients, too.
They come to me carrying stories of overspending, unhealthy relationships, hiding parts of themselves, numbing with work, food, or substances. And every time, when we peel back the layers, the root is always the same: somewhere along the way, they didn’t feel safe. Or they didn’t feel loved.
Here’s the problem: when we hurt others (or ourselves), we can often spiral into shame. And shame tricks us into either over-apologizing to relieve our own guilt, beating ourselves up and calling that “growth” or “accountability” (while nothing actually shifts), or avoiding self-reflection altogether so we don’t have to feel the discomfort.
Shame never creates real change.
What does create change is the willingness to look directly at the scared, protective parts of yourself. Not to excuse them, but to understand them. Because when you bring compassion to those parts, you stop repeating the same patterns that caused harm in the first place.
And this is exactly where conscious connected breathwork comes in.
Why Conscious Connected Breathwork Creates Lasting Change
Unlike pranayama practices that focus on control and regulation (which are important, but for different purposes), conscious connected breathwork is designed to disrupt your ordinary patterns of thought and bring you into a non-ordinary state of consciousness.
This style of breathwork increases oxygen saturation, reduces carbon dioxide, and alters brainwave activity, often moving you into theta brainwave states similar to those seen in deep meditation and psychedelic therapy. In this state, the default mode network (the part of the brain that loops old stories, identities, and shame narratives) quiets down.
What does that mean for you?
You access memories, emotions, and subconscious material with more clarity and less defense.
You can process old pain without immediately collapsing into shame or self-criticism.
You see yourself and your patterns from a place of expanded awareness, the way a psychedelic journey can, but entirely through your own breath.
This is why breathwork is so powerful for self-inquiry and shadow work: it gives you access to the deeper truths of why you acted the way you did, and the space to integrate compassion without bypassing accountability.
Your wounded parts don’t need more shame. They need understanding. Conscious connected breathwork is one of the most effective ways I know to access that understanding.
This can change the trajectory of your life from the inside out.
And as a breathwork guide, I am here to remind you that you are safe now. You are loved.
In fact, you are love in form.
Before Your Next Breathwork Session
Set an Intention for Compassionate Inquiry: Instead of approaching your session wanting to "fix" or "release" something, try this intention: "I'm willing to understand the scared part of me that created harm." This reframe creates more safety in your body which is what your nervous system needs before it will reveal what it's been protecting.
